The temporary administration has proposed the dismissal of 23,865 cases it identified as politically motivated and initiated during the Awami League government’s term, opening the door for relief to around five hundred thousand individuals.
These cases were registered from January 6, 2009, to August 5, 2024, against members and supporters of various political groups such as BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, Hefazat-e-Islam, and Gano Odhikar Parishad, as per a statement from the Ministry of Law.
To streamline the withdrawal procedure, on September 22, 2024, the temporary government established district-level panels led by deputy commissioners, along with an inter-ministerial group overseen by Law Adviser Asif Nazrul.
The inter-ministerial team called for submissions from political organizations requesting the withdrawal of cases they labeled as harassment by the prior administration.
After evaluating applications from the affected parties, the panel reviewed the cases in 39 meetings conducted at various intervals.
As per the press release, subsequent to the assessment, the panel suggested the withdrawal of 23,865 cases, with the statement indicating that the process of evaluating applications and proposing additional dismissals is still in progress.
