Bangladesh Mourns Loss of Football Legend Ranjit Das

Date:

Legendary football icon Ranjit Das, renowned as one of Bangladesh’s finest goalkeepers, has tragically passed away at a hospital in Sylhet after suffering a heart attack. The 94-year-old Das, a prominent figure in pre-independence football, notably represented the East Pakistan football team from 1955 to 1961. He is survived by his wife, four daughters, one son, and a multitude of admirers who are deeply saddened by his demise.

According to his son Rajib Das, the football legend experienced a severe heart attack around 4:00 am and succumbed to it later in the morning. Following an abrupt illness, Das had been hospitalized since January 31 and was subsequently transferred to the ICU. Despite appearing stable the day before, he suffered the fatal heart attack overnight. His funeral is scheduled to take place at Sylhet’s Talibandar Crematorium this evening.

Known for his exceptional goalkeeping skills, Das notably played for Ispahani Club, Azad Sporting Club, and Mohammedan SC before Bangladesh gained independence. Additionally, he contributed as a coach for the East Pakistan youth team and Azad SC, playing a pivotal role in nurturing young talents.

In the realm of post-independence Bangladeshi football, figures like Shantoo (Shahidur Rahman Shantoo), Mohsin (Mohammad Mohsin), and Aminul (Aminul Haque) often dominate discussions about top goalkeepers. However, before independence, Ranjit Das stood as an undisputed name in the sport. He was a cornerstone of the East Pakistan team and even received a call-up to the Pakistan national team camp, although he never competed internationally.

His remarkable contributions to football were recognized with the prestigious National Sports Award, solidifying his legacy as a revered figure in the history of Bangladeshi football.
