The European Union announced a new visa system and enhanced deportation measures as part of a five-year migration plan, reinforcing its stance on the contentious issue. Despite a decrease of over 25% in irregular arrivals in the 27-nation bloc in 2025, there is continued political pressure for action.
Magnus Brunner, the EU’s migration commissioner, emphasized the primary goal of reducing and sustaining low levels of illegal arrivals. The strategy presented recently highlights the importance of increasing deportations of unsuccessful asylum-seekers as one of the key objectives within the EU.
Brunner stated that abuse of the system tarnishes the reputation of migration, erodes public trust, hinders the ability to offer protection, and weakens efforts to attract skilled individuals.
