Bangladesh’s hopes of continuing their dominance in the SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship were shattered as India delivered a superb performance, clinching a 4-0 win in the final at the Pokhara Rangasala on Saturday.
Prior to the final, Peter Butler’s team were widely expected to win. With five championships under their belt, Bangladesh had previously defeated India 2-0 in the round-robin phase, boasting a flawless record of three wins, 18 goals scored, and none conceded. However, the final unfolded differently, with India showcasing superiority in all aspects to claim the title convincingly.
India seized control in the middle of the first half. In the 42nd minute, Pritika Barman unlocked the Bangladesh defense with a smart pass in the box, assisting Julan Nongmaithem, who calmly netted a goal after a precise cross from the left, granting India a well-deserved lead at halftime.
Struggling to mount a comeback after the break, Bangladesh faced further setbacks in the 61st minute when defender Protima Munda fouled Alva Devi inside the penalty area. With the danger escalating, Elizabed Lakra confidently converted the ensuing penalty kick, extending India’s lead.
Just seven minutes later, India seized an opportunity arising from an error by the Bangladesh goalkeeper. Pressured, Yearzan Begum failed to clear the ball, enabling Pearl Fernandez to capitalize on the mistake, scoring India’s third goal and sealing the outcome.
Bangladesh’s offensive efforts fell short against India’s solid defense, lacking creativity and clear chances. The comprehensive victory was sealed when Anvita Raghuraman scored in the 83rd minute, finalizing the impressive performance by India.
