Zimbabwe progressed to the Super Eight stage following a rain-affected match against Ireland in Kandy on Tuesday. This advancement makes Zimbabwe the second team from Group B to move forward, eliminating Australia from further contention in the tournament. Zimbabwe now holds five points from three games, while Australia has only accumulated two points and cannot surpass Zimbabwe’s total even if they win their last group match against Oman on Friday.
This marks the first time Zimbabwe has reached the Super Eight stage in the T20 World Cup. Conversely, this is only the second occasion that Australia, the champions of the 2021 edition, have been knocked out in the group stage of the tournament, with the previous elimination occurring in 2009.
