Apple Trials End-to-End Encrypted RCS Messaging in iOS Beta

Date:

Apple has initiated trials of end-to-end encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages within the latest developer beta version of iOS 26.4.

The tech giant specified that the initial rollout focuses on testing encrypted RCS messaging exclusively between Apple devices. While encryption is currently not compatible with other platforms, Apple confirmed that this feature will not be part of the public release of iOS 26.4. Instead, full-fledged support for encrypted RCS messaging is anticipated in a forthcoming software update.

RCS is widely seen as a modernized alternative to traditional SMS and MMS messaging, offering enhancements like improved media sharing, typing indicators, and read receipts. Despite Apple integrating RCS support to improve messaging interactions between iPhone and Android users, the lack of cross-platform end-to-end encryption has been a noticeable deficiency in the service.
