Police Headquarters Denies Rumors of IGP Resignation

Date:

The Police Headquarters (PHQ) has refuted claims of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam resigning from his position. In a statement today, PHQ stated that reports of the IGP’s resignation are inaccurate and urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation.

IGP Baharul Alam himself denied the rumors of his resignation, clarifying that they were untrue during an interview with The Daily Star. Speculation about his resignation arose shortly after the 13th national parliamentary election, as discussions took place at PHQ and the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the formation of a new government led by BNP.

Although an official mentioned that Baharul expressed an “intention” to resign during an internal meeting with PHQ officials on Sunday, the IGP clarified that he did not confirm any such decision. Prior to the election in January, Baharul had submitted his official passport for a regular one, and recent rumors of his resignation emerged approximately nine months before the end of his appointed tenure.

Having previously retired, Baharul Alam was appointed as IGP on a two-year contract on November 20, 2024. His appointment followed the events of August 5, 2024, when the Awami League-led government fell amidst widespread protests, leading to the hiding of then IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun. Subsequently, Md Moinul Islam was appointed as the new police chief, but he was removed by the government after three months due to criticism over the law and order situation. Baharul Alam was then appointed as IGP on the same day, serving on a two-year term.
