Nvidia is on the verge of finalizing a $30 billion investment in OpenAI, as part of a funding round aiming to exceed $100 billion, as per a recent report by Reuters citing an insider. This investment would place the creator of ChatGPT at a valuation of around $830 billion, making it one of the largest private fundraising efforts on record. SoftBank and Amazon are also anticipated to join this round, according to previous reports by Reuters.
The new deal is set to replace a previous commitment made in September, where Nvidia had planned to invest up to $100 billion to support OpenAI’s utilization of its chips in data centers, as reported by the Financial Times. Initially, a $10 billion investment was in the pipeline once a definitive agreement was reached for OpenAI to procure Nvidia systems. However, negotiations prolonged beyond expectations, the insider revealed to Reuters.
The primary objective of OpenAI with the fresh capital infusion is to acquire more of Nvidia’s chips, crucial for training and deploying its AI models, as disclosed by the source. When approached for comment by Reuters, Nvidia chose not to respond.
