Shakib Al Hasan’s Return to National Cricket Team Uncertain

Date:

Recent political changes have raised the likelihood of all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan rejoining the national cricket team, although various legal hurdles remain unresolved. Shakib’s return had been in doubt for over 18 months due to his ties with the previous Awami League government, where he served as a Member of Parliament for Magura-1. However, following the government’s downfall on August 5, 2024, uncertainty surrounded Shakib’s future in cricket.

Despite the political upheaval, Shakib continued to play for Bangladesh in international matches after the regime change, including games in Pakistan and India. His desire to end his Test career with a match against South Africa in Mirpur in October 2024 was thwarted by the interim government’s refusal to permit his return, citing security concerns. This decision left Shakib’s international career in limbo, sparking debates among fans and analysts.

The situation saw a glimmer of hope when the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on January 24 this year that Shakib was being considered for selection in upcoming series, both at home and abroad. This announcement followed the ICC’s decision to replace Bangladesh with Scotland in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to security issues. The BCB’s move was initially perceived as a distraction from the World Cup setback but gained significance after the February 12 national elections, which saw the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) clinch a decisive victory.

Recent statements by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque suggest a possible resolution to Shakib’s legal predicament. The ministers indicated that Shakib’s return might be feasible if legal matters were appropriately resolved. The cricketer faces three legal cases – cheque dishonor, money embezzlement, and murder – each pending legal review, casting uncertainty on his future in the sport.

The murder case involves the death of a garment worker during the student-led uprising in August 2024, with Shakib listed as the 28th accused in the FIR. While investigations are ongoing, no conclusive reports have been issued. Additionally, a cheque dishonor case and an embezzlement case are pending legal proceedings, with discussions ongoing to settle outstanding amounts and secure bail for Shakib.

As anticipation builds for Pakistan’s upcoming ODI series in March, hopes for Shakib’s return are tempered by the need for swift resolution of his legal challenges. Shakib has refrained from commenting on his availability for the series and his legal issues, leaving fans eagerly awaiting clarity on the future of the revered cricketer.
