A new viral trend on social media is encouraging users to create AI-generated caricatures of themselves, gaining popularity on various platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. This trend involves uploading a photo and using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to generate an illustrated version of the user based on their profession and personal background.
The caricatures often portray individuals in work environments like classrooms, offices, or clinics, with details such as clothing, tools, and surroundings. While various AI tools can produce similar visuals, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been widely used for this trend, with prompts like “create a caricature of me and my job based on everything you know about me.”
Many users see this trend as a way to express themselves digitally. Maizul Islam, an Associate Specialist at Ollyo, mentioned, “AI has grown significantly, and social platforms often promote AI-driven content for wider reach. I joined the trend to stay relevant while maintaining a balance. It adds some support to my digital branding but doesn’t define my professional identity.”
To create more personalized results, users often provide detailed prompts about their occupation, daily routines, and lifestyle. Professionals, students, freelancers, and tech workers have widely shared these images to showcase a creative online identity.
However, cybersecurity experts caution that sharing detailed personal information with photos can create a vulnerable digital profile, susceptible to social engineering or identity theft. Leandro Cuozzo, a Security Analyst at Kaspersky, warned about the risks associated with sharing work details, family information, or routines, which could be exploited for targeted fraud or scams.
Many users may not realize the extent of data stored by AI platforms. Besides the final image, these services may retain original photos, written prompts, usage history, and technical data like IP addresses, subject to their privacy policies. OpenAI and Google mention storing interactions for system performance improvement.
There is confusion about memory features in AI tools, where disabling memory does not prevent processing of provided information. Users must be cautious when interacting with AI platforms and avoid sharing excessive personal information to protect their privacy.
The popularity of this caricature trend showcases the increasing influence of generative AI in online self-expression. Users are urged to be mindful of sharing personal details and consider the long-term implications of uploading images to AI systems.
