“China Prevails 2-0 in AFC Women’s Asian Cup Opener”

Date:

In a highly anticipated showdown, Bangladesh faced off against the formidable China in their opening match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup at Western Sydney Stadium. Despite the 2-0 scoreline favoring China, the game was closely contested, showcasing Bangladesh’s resilience against the nine-time champions.

At halftime, Bangladesh found themselves trailing 2-0 to China, who capitalized on scoring opportunities late in the first half. Despite being ranked 112th in the world compared to China’s 17th position, Bangladesh put up a valiant effort on their tournament debut, demonstrating a competitive spirit on the field.

Under the leadership of captain Afeida Khandaker, Peter Butler’s team maintained a disciplined defensive formation in the first half, thwarting China’s attacking plays. Bangladesh almost surprised the favorites with a powerful long-range shot from Ritu Porna Chakma in the 14th minute, well saved by Chen Chen.

While China initially thought they had taken the lead in the 24th minute, the goal was disallowed by VAR for offside. However, Wang Shuang broke the deadlock in the 44th minute, followed by Zhang Rui doubling the lead just before halftime due to an error by Afeida.

Despite the setbacks, goalkeeper Mile Akter shone in an unexpected start, making crucial saves to keep Bangladesh in the game. In the second half, Bangladesh regrouped with strategic changes, increasing their possession and pressing higher against China, disrupting their flow and preventing further goals.

Mile’s strong performance in goal continued in the second half, ensuring Bangladesh held their ground and kept the match competitive until the final whistle. Up next, Afeida’s team will face North Korea on March 6, following North Korea’s 3-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the Group B opener.

The top two teams from each group, along with the top two third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals of the 12-team tournament. Additionally, the top six overall teams will secure qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
