Fraser and Weisz to Return in “The Mummy 4”

Date:

Oscar champions Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have confirmed their return to the ancient Egyptian setting. “The Mummy 4” is scheduled for a cinematic debut on May 19, 2028, with Universal Pictures as the project’s main supporter.

The upcoming chapter will be helmed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from Radio Silence, known for the 2019 thriller “Ready or Not”. David Coggeshall is the writer behind the screenplay.

Fraser and Weisz are set to embody their memorable characters as explorer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell. Their initial collaboration was in the 1999 remake of “The Mummy”, where they embarked on a journey to the hidden city of Hamunaptra, inadvertently unleashing the cursed high priest Imhotep. This movie achieved worldwide success, solidifying its status as one of Universal’s major blockbusters of the early 2000s with a global revenue surpassing $422 million.

The film series progressed with “The Mummy Returns” in 2001, introducing the Scorpion King narrative and expanding the O’Connells’ adventures. However, Weisz was absent in the franchise’s third installment, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” in 2008.

“The Mummy 4” is described as a direct sequel rather than a remake and is expected to overlook the events of the 2008 movie. Producer Sean Daniel, involved in the original trilogy, is returning alongside Radio Silence collaborators William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein under the Project X Entertainment banner.

Fraser’s career resurgence after his award-winning role in “The Whale” (2022) is thought to have sparked renewed interest in reviving the franchise. Weisz, on the other hand, continues to have a strong presence on screen, recently featuring in “Dead Ringers” and “Black Widow”.

With the original stars reuniting and a fresh creative team leading the way, the forthcoming installment of “The Mummy” series aims to infuse new vitality while tapping into the nostalgia that made the 1999 film a cult classic.
