OpenAI engineer Hieu Pham has made public his decision to leave the organization due to severe burnout and declining mental well-being resulting from years of dedicated work in cutting-edge AI research and development.
In a statement posted on a platform, Pham, a technical staff member at OpenAI, expressed that he has chosen to depart from the company. Previously affiliated with xAI, Pham was actively engaged in the advancement of the Grok-3 model.
Reflecting on his contributions, Pham shared his pride in having contributed to the creation of highly intelligent entities that are poised to enhance our daily lives significantly. However, he acknowledged the toll taken by the demanding workload, leading to burnout and a stark realization about the genuine impact on mental health that he had previously underestimated.
Pham outlined his intentions to take a hiatus from the forefront of AI research facilities and return to Vietnam with his family to prioritize his well-being and consider new paths moving forward.
Regarding his involvement in the Grok-3 project in February 2025, Pham described it as the culmination of extensive research and development efforts, highlighting the substantial time commitments required from the team. He recounted signing an agreement with xAI in July 2024, during which he undertook technical responsibilities even before his official commencement, including tasks related to managing power fluctuations within the Colossus supercomputer system.
Expressing gratitude for the enriching experiences gained at OpenAI and xAI, Pham emphasized the profound impact of the exceptional individuals he had the privilege of collaborating with throughout his tenure.
