“Democratic Rights Committee Calls for Interim Government Accountability”

Date:

The Democratic Rights Committee is advocating for the transparency of the activities conducted by the recently disbanded interim government. They are pushing for accountability for individuals accused of acting against national interests during this period of transition.

During the committee’s general meeting, led by Professor Anu Muhammad, the call for a detailed white paper on the interim government’s actions was made. The committee criticized the interim government for what they deemed as rushed and opaque dealings with the United States, particularly highlighting a trade agreement they labeled as detrimental to Bangladesh.

Expressing concerns that such agreements could compromise national sovereignty and create economic dependence on the US, the committee urged the current government to discontinue the agreement they deemed unlawful.

Furthermore, the committee voiced apprehensions regarding the appointment of a former interim government adviser to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citing the individual’s involvement in what they labeled as “anti-national” agreements that pose significant risks to the nation.

The committee also demanded thorough investigations into instances of post-election violence and the alleged gang rape in Hatiya. They called for the release of members of the Bawm community reportedly detained on fabricated charges.

Notable attendees at the meeting included Liberation War activist Dipa Dutta, researcher Mahtabuddin Ahmed, writer Chowdhury Mufad Ahmed, trade union leader Satyajit Biswas, Democratic Student Union leader Dilip Roy, lawyer Alaudin Ahmed, filmmaker Akram Khan, and rights activist Marzia Prava, among others.
