Bangladesh Seeks UN Help in Assassination Probe

Date:

The temporary government has officially requested the United Nations for assistance in conducting a fair, transparent, and prompt investigation into the assassination of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, a key figure in the July uprising.

Acting on directives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh embassy in Geneva dispatched a formal request known as a “Note Verbale” to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on Friday. The mission communicated this information to the ministry the following day.

The Bangladesh Ambassador in Geneva, Nahida Sobhan, mentioned in a letter to the foreign ministry that the mission will update the ministry upon receiving a response from the OHCHR.

OHCHR, the primary UN body dedicated to advocating for and safeguarding human rights, focuses on bolstering international rights, supporting treaty bodies, and carrying out field operations to monitor and report on human rights violations.

The Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, stated on Friday that the interim government is unwavering in its dedication to ensuring justice in this matter and is prepared to provide full cooperation for such an investigation.

Inqilab Moncho staged a protest near the chief adviser’s official residence, Jamuna, on Thursday, demanding an unbiased investigation under United Nations oversight into the killing of Hadi, who served as its spokesperson.

Hadi was fatally shot in Dhaka on December 12 last year while preparing to contest as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency. He succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Singapore on December 18.

After his demise, a case of attempted murder was registered with Paltan Police Station on December 14, which was later converted into a murder case and subsequently transferred to the DB.
