Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced that the United States is aiming to facilitate an end to the nearly four-year conflict between Ukraine and Russia by June. The US has proposed hosting talks between the two nations in Florida next week to seek a resolution.
Efforts led by the US to resolve Europe’s most deadly conflict since World War II have intensified recently. However, disagreements persist between Moscow and Kyiv, particularly regarding territorial issues. Russia, holding approximately 20% of Ukraine’s territory, is pushing for full control of the eastern Donetsk region as part of any potential agreement. Threats of force have been made by Russia in case negotiations do not progress as desired.
In response, Ukraine asserts that yielding territory will embolden Moscow, and therefore, it is unwilling to sign an agreement that does not effectively deter Russia from future incursions. Zelensky disclosed to the media that the US has proposed holding a meeting between the negotiating teams of Ukraine and Russia in the United States, possibly in Miami, within a week, with a target of concluding discussions by June.
The United States has previously facilitated two rounds of negotiations in Abu Dhabi since January, resulting in a significant prisoner exchange but falling short of achieving a breakthrough on territorial disputes. Both Moscow and Kyiv have acknowledged the challenging nature of the talks. Zelensky has voiced frustration over what he perceives as Ukraine being pressured to make disproportionate concessions compared to Russia.
Ukraine’s proposal involves freezing the conflict along the existing front lines, which has been rejected by Russia. Instead, the US is advocating for Kyiv to transform the land it currently controls in the Donetsk region into a “free economic zone,” where neither party holds military authority.
