“Sony Faces £2 Billion Lawsuit Over Digital Game Prices”

Date:

Sony is currently facing a legal battle in London involving nearly £2 billion ($2.7 billion), where it is accused of utilizing its market dominance to artificially inflate prices for digital games and add-ons. The lawsuit alleges that Sony’s requirement for digital game purchases to be made exclusively through the PlayStation Store restricts competition, leading to higher prices compared to physical game copies.

Initially valued at up to £5 billion, the lawsuit has now been reduced to £1.97 billion. The case represents around 12 million consumers in the United Kingdom seeking restitution for alleged overpayment. The lead litigant, Alex Neill, emphasized that gamers have been overcharged and should be entitled to refunds. Sony’s ability to unilaterally set retail prices for digital content without facing market competition is a central point of contention in the trial.

In response, Sony has defended its practices by highlighting the substantial investments made over the years to develop an inclusive gaming platform that benefits consumers in a competitive marketplace. The company points out that competitors like Nintendo and Microsoft’s Xbox also operate under similar business models. Sony’s legal team argues that the profit margins from game sales are reasonable, emphasizing the importance of considering the company’s operational costs and brand value.

Recent data from Sony’s quarterly earnings report indicates the sale of 8 million PlayStation 5 consoles between October and December. This legal dispute is the third major consumer case involving a tech giant to reach trial in the UK since the beginning of 2025. Notably, in a separate case last year, the tribunal ruled against Apple regarding its App Store policies, a decision that Apple is currently appealing. Furthermore, a trial involving a lawsuit against Google is scheduled to commence in October, although Epic Games recently withdrew its claim following Google’s announcement of modifications to its Play Store policies.
