Australian fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis has highlighted the fierce competition among pacers vying for a place in the national team’s attack following Mitchell Starc’s retirement from Twenty20 internationals. Starc, the third-highest wicket-taker for Australia, stepped down from T20 internationals in September last year, creating an opportunity in the fast-bowling lineup previously dominated by Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood.
Dwarshuis, who debuted internationally in 2022, is contending for selection alongside fellow pace bowlers like Nathan Ellis, Xavier Bartlett, and Spencer Johnson. With Starc’s departure, a door has opened for aspiring bowlers to secure a spot in the team, intensifying the competition for places.
Recognizing the significance of franchise leagues in showcasing players for international selection, Dwarshuis, who was acquired by Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League for a substantial sum, emphasized the exposure and opportunities these platforms provide. As the second-highest wicket-taker in the Big Bash League history, Dwarshuis stressed the importance of consistent performance to attract attention from selectors and enhance prospects for international recognition.
Despite Punjab Kings’ strong squad depth and their initial IPL victory, Dwarshuis highlighted his versatility as a bowler capable of delivering throughout the 20 overs. When asked about his target wicket for the season, Dwarshuis expressed a desire to dismiss Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli, acknowledging the challenge but relishing the opportunity to achieve such a feat.
