Lionel Messi scored a goal at Inter Miami’s new stadium as they played to a 2-2 draw against Austin FC on Saturday. The 26,000-capacity Nu Stadium, which marked the end of a long journey to find a permanent home, was inaugurated with co-owner David Beckham in attendance.
Beckham expressed his joy at finally seeing the stadium come to life after years of effort. He highlighted the significance of the moment, recounting his promises from 20 years ago when he joined the MLS and 13 years ago when he announced his venture into Miami.
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, Austin FC surprised the home crowd by taking an early lead through Guilherme Biro’s header off a corner from Facundo Torres. Messi quickly responded with a headed goal, leveling the score at 1-1.
Inter Miami controlled possession and created several opportunities, with Mateo Silvetti coming close to scoring twice in the first half. However, Austin’s resilient defense and swift counterattacks kept them in the game, leading to Jayden Nelson’s goal in the 53rd minute.
In a bid to turn the tide, coach Javier Mascherano introduced Luis Suarez in the 73rd minute. Suarez made an impact by equalizing with a close-range finish after a Messi corner was flicked on by German Berterame. Although Suarez thought he had secured a late winner, his goal was disallowed for offside after hitting the woodwork from Messi’s free-kick.
