Denying social media rumors, the defense attorney for former law minister Anisul Huq and ex-adviser to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Salman F Rahman, stated that claims of them voting while in jail custody are untrue.
Advocate Palash Chandra Roy, representing both defendants, refuted the allegations during a discussion with reporters at the International Crimes Tribunal, where Anisul and Salman appeared regarding a crimes against humanity case related to the mass uprising in July 2024.
Palash addressed the widespread dissemination of these claims online, causing confusion about the legality and process of voting from jail.
“My clients have been made aware through various sources about the false information circulating on social media, suggesting that they voted while in custody,” he remarked.
Elaborating on the voting procedure, the lawyer emphasized that voting from prison involves specific legal protocols, such as prior registration with relevant authorities, which neither of his clients had completed.
“Voting from jail has well-defined processes, including pre-registration. Since my clients were not registered, the notion of them voting from jail is unfounded,” Palash informed the press.
Moreover, he dismissed a viral assertion alleging that Salman had voted for a specific electoral symbol.
“This claim is entirely false and deceptive,” he asserted.
Anisul and Salman are presently held in custody and undergoing legal proceedings for their alleged roles in crimes against humanity linked to the mass uprising in July 2024.
The defense counsel advised the public to rely on verified information and refrain from sharing baseless claims circulating on social media platforms.
