Transparency International Bangladesh’s Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman emphasized that the Awami League must acknowledge its errors and show regret for its actions before rejoining political activities. Speaking at a press briefing on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) report, he highlighted that the party’s previous stance against the current election process makes its claim for participation invalid.
Iftekharuzzaman noted that discussions on inclusive elections must also consider the past 16 years when the Awami League was in power, with few voices questioning inclusivity during that time. He criticized the party for attempting to influence the election environment indirectly despite officially boycotting the polls.
Questioning the Awami League’s genuine commitment to non-participation, Iftekharuzzaman pointed out instances where party supporters voted while in detention, a practice the party itself protested against. He highlighted that at the grassroots level, party members are not running under the Awami League banner but are aligning with other political groups.
The TIB chief emphasized that the Awami League’s political credibility must be self-regained through accountability and acceptance of wrongdoing. He suggested that public acceptance could be achievable if the party takes responsibility, expresses remorse, and admits its mistakes, leaving the decision in their hands.
