“Meta Implements Employee Tracking for AI Enhancement”

Date:

Meta is implementing tracking software on the computers of its employees in the United States to observe mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes for the purpose of enhancing its AI models, as per internal documents reviewed by Reuters.

Referred to as the Model Capability Initiative, this tool will operate on work-related software and websites, periodically capturing screenshots of employee screens, as detailed in a memo shared by a staff AI research scientist earlier this week. The collected data aims to refine Meta’s AI algorithms, specifically focusing on areas where human-computer interactions are challenging to replicate, like navigating dropdown menus and utilizing keyboard shortcuts.

In a separate memo cited in the Reuters report, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth informed employees of the company’s intention to expand internal data collection efforts under the “AI for Work” initiative, now renamed as the Agent Transformation Accelerator. Bosworth articulated a vision where employees primarily execute tasks while Meta assists in supervising, reviewing, and enhancing their performance.

Andy Stone, a spokesperson for Meta, confirmed that the data obtained would be utilized for training the AI models and assured that protective measures are in place to safeguard “sensitive content,” without specifying any exemptions. It was clarified that the collected data would not be used for evaluating employee performance.

This development coincides with Meta’s plan to reduce its global workforce by 10% beginning May 20, with additional layoffs anticipated later this year. Notably, Amazon has recently downsized its corporate workforce by 30,000 positions, while Block made significant staff reductions in February.

Legal analysts highlighted that while there are no federal restrictions on employee surveillance in the United States, European regulations would likely prohibit such monitoring. For instance, in Italy, electronic monitoring for productivity purposes is explicitly banned, and in Germany, keystroke logging is permitted only under exceptional circumstances, such as during criminal investigations.
