“National Citizen Party Secures Six Seats in Debut Election”

Date:

The National Citizen Party (NCP), a youth-led political entity, has made a notable debut by securing six seats in its inaugural parliamentary election amid uncertainties regarding its political trajectory and alliance preferences.

Leaders of the NCP emphasized that the election outcome demonstrates the electorate’s confidence in the party. They vowed to engage in proactive politics both within and outside the parliament.

Having contested in 30 constituencies as part of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party coalition during the 13th parliamentary election, the NCP emerged victorious in six seats, as per unofficial results. The party disclosed receiving a total of 21 lakh votes nationwide.

Key wins for the NCP include Nahid Islam clinching Dhaka-11 with 93,872 votes, surpassing BNP candidate MA Quayum, who garnered 91,833 votes. Additionally, Akhter Hossen secured victory in Rangpur-4, Hasnat Abdullah in Cumilla-4, Hannan Masud in Noakhali-6, Abdullah Al Amin in Narayanganj-4, and Atiq Mujahid in Kurigram-2, based on the party’s preliminary data.

Despite the triumphs, NCP leaders acknowledged not meeting all anticipated results and indicated a review of constituencies where voting irregularities were suspected.

In response to queries about the election outcome, Abdullah expressed reservations, citing concerns over the fairness of the process in certain areas. The party plans to release an official statement addressing the matter and assess the overall situation going forward.

Abdullah affirmed the NCP’s commitment to functioning as an opposition force, aiming to drive constructive reforms and enhance the political landscape. He expressed optimism about the party’s growth, foreseeing it evolving into Bangladesh’s primary political entity within the next five years.

Originating from the July 2024 uprising, the NCP evolved from the Students Against Discrimination movement, pivotal in the student-led protests. Following the uprising’s success, key figures transitioned to form the party, advocating for innovative party structures and comprehensive reforms.

To expand its influence nationally, the NCP embarked on the “July Podojatra,” a nationwide campaign that bolstered its presence and momentum. Transitioning from activism to electoral participation raised questions about the party’s electoral viability.

Amid internal discord stemming from its decision to join the Jamaat-led alliance, several leaders resigned or became inactive, impacting the party’s cohesion. Despite these challenges, the NCP managed to secure a foothold in parliament with six seats, marking a significant milestone.

NCP insiders revealed plans for post-election restructuring, including efforts to engage with departed members, as the party aims to solidify its standing and define its role as a parliamentary opposition force.
