“Japan’s First Female Prime Minister Vows Defense Strengthening”

Date:

Japan’s lower chamber officially reinstated Sanae Takaichi as the prime minister on Tuesday, following her significant victory in the recent lower house elections. Takaichi, aged 64, made history as Japan’s first female leader when she assumed office in October. Her party secured a decisive two-thirds majority in the snap elections held on February 8.

The prime minister has outlined her intentions to strengthen Japan’s defenses to safeguard its territory and maritime boundaries, a move that could strain relations with Beijing. Additionally, she aims to rejuvenate the country’s sluggish economy.

In November, Takaichi hinted at the possibility of Japan taking military action if China attempted to forcefully seize Taiwan. This stance drew strong condemnation from China, which considers Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to assert control over the island.

During the Munich Security Conference last Saturday, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi criticized Japan, accusing certain elements within the country of attempting to revive militarism.
