Arijit Singh debuts independent track “Raina” after stepping back from playback singing

Date:

Indian vocalist Arijit Singh has embarked on a new phase of his music career by unveiling his debut independent track, “Raina,” subsequent to his choice to abstain from taking on additional playback singing assignments. The love ballad, launched on February 27, signifies a deliberate transition from movie-centric music towards artist-led creative endeavors.

Renowned for his contributions to the contemporary Hindi film industry’s emotional landscape, Arijit Singh surprised both fans and industry insiders earlier this year with his decision to forego new playback projects. Despite his continued prominence in film soundtracks, the singer made it clear that already recorded songs would still be released in the upcoming months.

With “Raina,” Singh’s artistic evolution becomes evident. The song, crafted by Shekhar Ravjiani with lyrics penned by Priya Saraiya, was introduced on Instagram with the message, “‘Raina’ is out now and all yours. Turn up the volume, feel its essence, immerse yourself in the night. Watch the official video on the @garuudaamusiic YouTube Channel.”

Centered around subtle instrumentation and lingering tunes, the track stays true to Singh’s signature emotional style while allowing him more creative freedom beyond the confines of cinema. Described as a “deeply romantic tribute to a woman embodying the essence of the night itself—mysterious, stunning, and infinite,” the song has garnered swift online acclaim.

Fans took to social media to shower praise on the release, viewing it as a poignant farewell to one chapter and the dawn of another. Comments ranged from “Arijit Singh delivering exceptional independent music post-playback era” to “This portrays a different facet of Arijit Singh—slow, sweet, and soul-stirring.”

Singh disclosed his retirement from playback singing on January 27 via Instagram, expressing gratitude to his audience for their enduring support. While many were initially puzzled by his announcement, the singer clarified that several unreleased recordings are still awaiting release, expected to unfold gradually in the ensuing months.

Despite his shift in focus, Singh’s vocals will persist in cinema for the foreseeable future. He has already lent his voice to tracks for the upcoming film “Ek Din,” featuring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi, and produced by Aamir Khan. The film’s title track has been recently unveiled, ensuring Singh’s continued presence in the world of film music as he steers his artistry in a fresh direction.

For an artist whose playback career epitomized an era of Bollywood romance, “Raina” symbolizes not a retreat but a recalibration—a journey guided by independence, experimentation, and a more subdued approach to musical expression.
