“Opposition Alliance Plans Protest for Constitutional Reform”

Date:

The 11-party alliance led by Jamaat announced a protest initiative urging constitutional reform aligned with a referendum decision. The event is set to take place at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque at 5:00 pm the next day.

Hamidur Rahman Azad, Jamaat’s assistant secretary general, shared that alongside the protest, the opposition plans to engage in public outreach and distribute leaflets to emphasize their demand. Additionally, seminars and symposiums will be conducted on the referendum’s implementation and the July charter.

Azad mentioned that if the government continues to disregard public sentiment, the opposition will escalate their actions. The alliance’s top leaders will convene on April 7 to determine the next steps.

On the other hand, a senior BNP official, preferring anonymity, stated that the government perceives the opposition’s actions as pressure tactics, particularly through street demonstrations, with the July charter implementation demand as a key aspect of their strategy.

The timing of the opposition’s protests coincides with the government grappling with various challenges, including repercussions from the Israel-US conflict with Iran and a measles outbreak.

Azad criticized the ruling party for opposing the referendum, labeling it as regrettable. He alleged that this stance contradicts the agreements that led to the interim government’s formation and subsequent elections.

Referring to the fuel scarcity issue, Azad accused the government of disseminating false information and pointed out the unavailability of fuel at gas stations despite official claims. He also criticized the government’s proposal for online classes three days a week, citing inconsistencies with their assessment of the transportation situation.
