Violence Erupts After Elections, One Dead, Five Injured

Date:

One person died and five others sustained injuries in separate incidents of violence following the elections from Friday evening until last night across five districts.

The deceased, identified as Osman Sardar, 29, was a supporter of an independent candidate in Bagerhat-2 and resided in Paronowapara village in Bagerhat Sadar upazila.

According to the victim’s elder brother, Enamul Kabir Sardar, a clash erupted between supporters of the BNP-nominated candidate Barrister Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain and rebel candidate MAH Selim in Chitabari village on the border of Kachua and Sadar upazilas on Friday evening. Osman was fatally injured in the altercation and later succumbed to his injuries at Khulna Medical College Hospital.

The Bagerhat BNP Convener, ATM Akram Hossain Talim, denied involvement of their activists in the incident, attributing it to a possible internal dispute among supporters of the independent candidate.

In another incident in Feni’s Daganbhuiyan upazila, Jaynal Abedin Dulal, a Jamaat-e-Islami activist, was attacked by BNP members, resulting in injuries. Tragically, Jaynal’s mother, Rowshan Ara, aged 65, passed away after hearing about the attack on her son.

The BNP’s newly elected lawmaker from Feni-3, Abdul Awal Mintoo, expressed condolences over the incident and vowed to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable.

In Natore’s Boraigram upazila, clashes between BNP and Jamaat activists left two individuals injured and several houses damaged in Dhanaidah village. The tension between the groups escalated following the election.

Emonudduza Ahmed, a leader of Jatiya Jubo Shakti in Sunamganj, was injured in an assault by unidentified individuals, with the incident currently under police investigation.

In Netrokona’s Purbadhala upazila, Jubo Dal leader Kamal Hossain was injured in a clash between BNP and Jamaat supporters. The clash occurred during a victory procession by Jamaat activists in Netrokona-5, leading to confrontations with BNP activists.

Lastly, in Jashore Sadar, a bus belonging to the election coordinator of a BNP candidate was set on fire in Bahadurpur (Mehogoni Tola) area early on Saturday. The bus owner, Abu Bakkar Siddiqui, was associated with the newly elected Jashore-3 lawmaker from BNP, Anindya Islam Amit.

Authorities have initiated investigations into the incidents, with efforts to bring the culprits to justice underway.
