Moscow’s unwavering support for Cuba was reaffirmed by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting with Havana’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez in Moscow on Wednesday. Putin reiterated Russia’s commitment to standing by the Caribbean island nation in the face of extensive sanctions imposed by the United States.
Rodriguez visited Russia, a long-standing ally, seeking assistance as Cuba grapples with a severe fuel crisis exacerbated by the US’s virtual oil embargo. Following the removal of Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro from power, US President Donald Trump ceased critical supplies of Venezuelan oil to Cuba and has issued warnings of sanctions on countries that provide oil to Havana.
During the meeting at the Kremlin, Putin expressed, “We have consistently supported Cuba in its pursuit of independence and the freedom to chart its own course.”
