“Opposition Leader Warns Government Against Undermining Rights”

Date:

Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman issued a stern caution to the government, stating that any efforts to undermine the people’s mandate or restrict their rights would spark a movement. Speaking at a rally organized by Dhaka district Jamaat in Keraniganj, the opposition leader emphasized the potential resurgence of their past struggles if necessary.

Advocating for unity in navigating the current global uncertainties, Rahman welcomed the government’s positive initiatives. He emphasized the importance of adhering to lawful boundaries while expressing opposition to violence as a means of protest.

Highlighting the need for substantial constitutional reforms rather than mere amendments, he criticized the emergence of fascism despite multiple constitutional changes. Rahman underscored the urgency of eradicating provisions that facilitate fascist tendencies within the constitution.

Describing fascism as a contagious ailment, he cautioned against its proliferation and condemned any disregard for the people’s will as a precursor to such authoritarianism. Rahman criticized the ruling party’s preference for amendments over comprehensive reforms, attributing the current crisis to the government’s failure to convene the Constitutional Reform Council.

Emphasizing the potential for a parliamentary resolution if the government demonstrates willingness, Rahman urged for a peaceful resolution within the legislative framework. He vowed to persist with the movement until their demands are met, warning of a return to street protests if necessary.

Rejecting accusations of seeking to abolish the constitution entirely, Rahman clarified that their intent is focused on reform rather than annulment. He called for the autonomy of judiciary, media, anti-corruption, and human rights bodies, cautioning against potential attempts to undermine their independence.
