The annual festival of Dol Purnima at the sacred site of Bengali mystic poet and spiritual thinker Lalon Shah, also known as Lalon Fakir or Shahji, commences today (March 2) at Chheuriya Akhrabari in Kushtia, attracting Baul singers, devotees, and spiritual seekers despite adjustments due to Ramadan.
Typically spanning three days with musical performances, discussions, and a lively rural fair, this year’s celebration has been condensed to a two-day affair. Cultural displays and the customary fair have been put on hold, with a renewed focus on spiritual dialogues, traditional practices, and hosting Baul visitors, as per the organizers.
In charge, Mashiur Rahman, mentioned preparations are being coordinated with aid from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the local administration. The official activities are set to conclude by noon on Tuesday (March 3).
Even prior to the official commencement, followers had started congregating at the Akhrabari days in advance. On Saturday afternoon, groups congregated across the shrine’s premises, engaging in Lalon songs and deep discussions – a common prelude to the annual gathering.
Despite the Ramadan period potentially leading to smaller turnouts, many attendees arrived early. The rituals are scheduled to kick off this evening with Gurukarya, followed by the Rakhial service and midnight Adhibash. The Balya service is slated for tomorrow at dawn, culminating in the Purna service by midday.
Enhanced security measures have been implemented around the shrine. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Farzana Akhtar stated that CCTV surveillance has been installed, with police, Ansar personnel, village police, and volunteer squads on standby. Medical personnel have also been arranged to provide assistance to visiting devotees.
