The finance minister, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, announced that the government is working tirelessly to streamline processes and boost the economy to $1 trillion by 2034, likening its operations to that of the private sector. He emphasized the significant regulatory reforms by mentioning that his recent budget speech included a lengthy list of deregulation measures.
To ensure smooth implementation of these changes and avoid bureaucratic hurdles, direct enforcement actions are being taken by the government, as stated by the minister. He made these remarks as the chief guest during the formal launch of RSGT Bangladesh at the Sheraton Dhaka in Banani.
RSGT Bangladesh, which operates the Patenga Container Terminal at Chattogram port, marks a crucial step in addressing longstanding logistics challenges faced by the local business community, particularly related to vessel turnaround and delivery times, according to the minister.
Highlighting the economic importance of efficient port operations, the minister stressed that every hour and day are valuable in business. He underscored the significance of Chattogram becoming the leading logistics hub not only for Bangladesh but for the broader South Asian region.
Referencing the historical ties between Dhaka and Riyadh, the minister traced the relationship back to President Ziaur Rahman’s rapport with the Saudi royal family, which flourished further during Begum Khaleda Zia’s tenure, leading to millions of Bangladeshi expatriates in Saudi Arabia.
Expressing gratitude for RSGT’s presence as a continuation of this alliance, the minister encouraged the Saudi company to explore additional investment opportunities beyond the port sector, assuring full government support. Aamer Abdullah Zainal Alireza, executive chairman of RSGT, and Erwin Haaze, CEO of RSGT Bangladesh, also shared their insights during the event.
