“Confident Parents Better Protect Kids’ Online Privacy”

Date:

A recent study conducted by Kaspersky in partnership with the Singapore Institute of Technology revealed that parents who are more confident in handling digital risks are more likely to safeguard their children’s online privacy. The study focused on how parents perceive and address the risks associated with sharing information about their children on social media. While sharing family moments online can enhance connections and document daily life, it also exposes children to potential dangers like profiling, tracking, and misuse of personal data.

The research, based on 152 responses from parents in Asia and other regions, emphasized the significance of “self-efficacy” in managing online threats. Approximately 85% of participants expressed confidence in avoiding sharing sensitive details, with 84% indicating their ability to restrict access to trusted groups. Moreover, around 80% mentioned disabling resharing options, and 78% said they delete metadata from their posts. The survey, which was conducted from mid-October 2025 to February 2026, targeted parents with children up to 12 years old.

The study also highlighted variations based on age and gender. Older parents exhibited more proactive behaviors, attributed to their accumulated experience. Mothers showed higher levels of confidence in safeguarding their children’s digital footprint. Despite the overall awareness levels, the findings underscored the ongoing necessity for cybersecurity education and media literacy. The press release emphasized that risks associated with online sharing are often not immediately apparent, underscoring the importance of continued awareness and education efforts.
