Bangladesh’s veteran cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim was recently approached with an opportunity to make a comeback to One-Day Internationals (ODIs) despite retiring from the format last year. Having previously withdrawn from T20Is, Mushfiqur, who is currently focused on Test cricket, confirmed that he politely declined the offer.
There had been widespread speculation about the 39-year-old’s potential return to bolster Bangladesh’s struggling middle order in ODIs, but the discussions did not progress to an official level.
Addressing the media ahead of the Sylhet Test against Pakistan, Mushfiqur revealed, “I did receive a proposal regarding ODI cricket. However, I believe that the Bangladesh team is in a good place now and is heading towards a promising future, hence my services may not be needed, Insha’Allah.”
Mushfiqur had announced his retirement from ODIs in March 2025 through social media. This decision came after a series of poor performances in the Champions Trophy, where he failed to reach double digits in three consecutive matches. Faced with criticism, he chose to conclude his ODI career at that point.
With 7,795 runs in 274 matches at an average of 36.42, Mushfiqur stands as Bangladesh’s second-highest run-scorer in ODIs. As the first Bangladeshi cricketer to surpass a hundred Tests, Mushfiqur is now fully dedicated to excelling in the Test format.
