The BNP, led by Tarique Rahman, has clinched a substantial mandate, while the Jamaat-e-Islami, helmed by Shafiqur Rahman, has emerged as the second-largest party in the new parliament.
Despite lacking prior legislative experience, these leaders, along with over two-thirds of the newly-elected lawmakers, are poised to shape the trajectory of the 13th parliament. Among the diverse representation in the parliament, eight parties will play a role, with key figures from five parties stepping into the role of MPs for the first time.
Commenting on this unique scenario, parliamentary affairs expert Nizam Ahmed emphasized the unprecedented nature of both the House leader and opposition leader being first-time MPs. He highlighted historical precedents, such as the absence of an official opposition leader in the inaugural parliament following the 1973 national polls.
In the new parliamentary composition, a significant majority of 70% comprises first-time legislators, with the BNP and Jamaat featuring a high proportion of newcomers within their respective ranks. Smaller parties are entirely represented by novice lawmakers, reflecting a trend towards fresh faces in the legislative landscape.
The recent election saw Tarique Rahman win his first electoral bid, securing victories in both Bogura-6 and Dhaka-17 constituencies. Meanwhile, Shafiqur Rahman and Zonayed Saki overcame previous electoral setbacks to garner success in their latest contests.
