Business individuals will comprise over half of the newly elected parliament members, as per the disclosures submitted to the Election Commission. A total of 178 legislators stated “business” as their profession in the filings. Excluding two who did not disclose their earnings, the average yearly income among these legislators stands at Tk 1 crore.
The second-largest category is lawyers, with 40 securing seats in parliament. Their average annual income is reported at Tk 26.8 lakh. Fourteen lawmakers identified themselves as farmers or engaged in agricultural activities, with an average yearly income of Tk 11.7 lakh.
The farmer with the lowest income is Md Golam Rabbani from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Rangpur-5, earning Tk 40,000 annually. Despite his low income, he possesses movable assets worth Tk 22.9 lakh, while his wife holds movable assets valued at Tk 16.5 lakh.
A total of 28 teachers have been elected to parliament, with only four not affiliated with Jamaat. Additionally, only nine individuals identified themselves as politicians, including prominent figures such as Tarique Rahman from BNP and various members from Jamaat.
Ten doctors have also secured seats in parliament, three from Jamaat and the remainder from BNP. The highest-earning doctor, Md Moselehuddin Farid from Jamaat, practices abroad and boasts the highest income among doctor-legislators, averaging Tk 18 lakh annually.
Other parliament members include retired professionals, private sector employees, and scientists. The top earner in parliament is Zakaria Taher from BNP representing Cumilla-8, with an annual income of Tk 59.1 crore and the highest movable assets totaling Tk 172.3 crore.
Notably, the second-highest earner is Mirza Abbas from BNP’s Dhaka-8, with an annual income of Tk 9.26 crore. BNP’s Md Jalal Uddin from Chandpur-2 holds the second-highest value of immovable assets, originally valued at Tk 55.2 crore, now worth Tk 220.7 crore.
The lawmaker with the lowest income is Md Shahjahan from BNP in Noakhali-4, earning Tk 32,822 annually from share investments. Despite his low income, he and his wife collectively possess significant assets, including cash, bank deposits, stocks, and immovable properties.
Naser Rahman, another BNP lawmaker from Moulvibazaar-3, holds the highest immovable assets valued at Tk 56.6 crore, with a current worth of Tk 87 crore. The top 20 lawmakers with the highest movable and immovable assets all belong to BNP.
Independent lawmakers report the highest average annual income at Tk 37.5 lakh, while BNP legislators average Tk 20.9 lakh and Jamaat legislators average Tk 5.9 lakh annually. The sole Islami Andolon Bangladesh representative, Oli Ullah from Barguna-1, possesses total assets valued at Tk 1 crore.
Among National Citizen Party parliamentarians, Nahid Islam from Dhaka-11 earns the highest income at Tk 16 lakh from consultancies, while Atikur Rahman Mojahid from Kurigram-2 reports the lowest income and asset value at Tk 7.32 lakh.
