Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus praised the efforts of the interim government in upholding democratic principles and rights over the past 18 months. He urged all citizens to continue working towards establishing a fair, compassionate, and democratic Bangladesh. In his farewell speech to the nation, he emphasized the need for unity across all divides to achieve this goal.
Highlighting the progress made during the last 18 months, Yunus stated that the people of Bangladesh have begun to experience democracy, governance focused on welfare, freedom of expression, the ability to question authority, and accountability. He described the recent national election as the commencement of a new phase for the country’s democracy, rather than just a transfer of power.
Yunus commended the successful conduct of the recent election, which he described as festive, transparent, peaceful, and inclusive. He thanked those involved in ensuring the people’s right to vote and acknowledged the sacrifices made by young protesters in July 2024.
Reflecting on his tenure, the chief adviser mentioned that his government strived to fulfill the people’s aspirations, leaving any judgment on their performance to the citizens. He stressed the government’s commitment to accountability, focusing on prosecuting crimes against humanity, corruption, and systemic irregularities without bias towards any political party.
Yunus noted the improvements made in the country’s law and order situation during his term, aiming to restore public trust and confidence in institutions. He highlighted the reforms initiated to prevent future governments from acting against the will of the people.
Expressing confidence in the citizens and political actors to safeguard and enhance the democratic progress, Yunus called for a collective effort to build a better future for the next generation. As he prepared to step down from his duties, he expressed gratitude to all citizens of Bangladesh and requested their prayers for his future endeavors.
