Reekita Nondine Shimu’s acting career has been characterized by steady growth and significant impact. Starting out with acclaimed director Tareque Masud in “Runway,” Shimu’s journey took off as she garnered recognition for her role as a strong, independent woman in “Shimu,” also known as “Made in Bangladesh,” directed by Rubaiyat Hossain. This performance earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress in 2023 and the Best Actress Award at the Saint-Jean-de-Luz International Film Festival in France.
Shimu’s talent also shone in “Once Upon a Time in Calcutta,” directed by Aditya Vikram Sengupta, which premiered at the renowned Venice Film Festival. Alongside her acting success, Shimu has actively sought to make a positive impact on society through her roles, such as portraying female garment workers in “Under Construction.”
Last year, Shimu embarked on a new chapter by participating in the International Women’s Peace Group’s Peace Leadership program in South Korea. This organization is dedicated to promoting global peace through solidarity, education, and international cooperation.
Reflecting on her experience, Shimu shared that the program was transformative, connecting her with individuals from diverse backgrounds worldwide. This exposure broadened her understanding of leadership and social responsibility, emphasizing the importance of daily actions in promoting peace.
Impressed by her commitment, IWPG offered Shimu the role of a peace advocate, a position she enthusiastically embraced to raise awareness and inspire others to work towards peace within their communities.
Shimu emphasized the power of connection and solidarity in achieving peace, noting that regardless of geographical boundaries, shared experiences and aspirations unite individuals. She highlighted the role of art as a bridge to this collective purpose.
In addition to her advocacy work, Shimu has been involved in Rubaiyat Hossain’s upcoming project, “The Difficult Bride,” collaborating with a talented ensemble cast. The film recently secured a substantial grant at the Berlin International Film Festival, marking its second funding success on the global film stage.
Shimu expressed her admiration for Rubaiyat Hossain’s approach to storytelling, particularly her emphasis on showcasing women in key roles both locally and internationally. Through her work, Shimu has come to appreciate the universal nature of women’s experiences and the strength that emerges from solidarity and shared dreams.
She concluded by highlighting the importance of women supporting each other and leveraging their collective voices to make a meaningful impact through art and storytelling.
