“Jagannath University to Reclaim Occupied Halls”

Date:

The Jagannath University administration is set to initiate a new effort to regain control of its long‑occupied residential halls. The decision was made during a meeting led by Vice‑Chancellor Prof Dr Rais Uddin in the university’s conference room today.

The meeting focused on legal and administrative strategies, as well as political coordination to facilitate the recovery process. The estate office provided an overview of the current status of 12 university-owned halls, detailing occupiers and updates on ongoing legal proceedings.

The Vice-Chancellor announced the immediate formation of a committee to supervise the recovery process, with plans to meet with the local member of parliament later this week. “We will kickstart the hall recovery process with renewed energy based on the discussions held in the meeting,” he stated.

Efforts are underway to gather necessary documents, including land records, and to develop a systematic approach for reclaiming each hall, as mentioned by the Vice-Chancellor. Treasurer Prof Dr Sabina Sharmin emphasized the importance of a unified strategy involving social, legal, and political aspects.

Student leaders and representatives from various student organizations advocated for a non-compromising stance and urged for the full recovery of the halls, expressing optimism for government support. The meeting was attended by Acting Registrar Prof Dr Md Sheikh Gias Uddin, the proctor, the director of student welfare, representatives from the teachers’ association, faculty members, officials, and journalists.
