The use of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Bangladesh is no longer limited to just high-end consumers, as they are now becoming a common sight on the streets of Dhaka. The country has introduced green number plates for EVs to distinguish them from traditional fuel-powered vehicles as part of efforts to promote cleaner transportation.
According to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), there were 669 registered electric vehicles in Bangladesh as of May 14, 2026. The registration of EVs began in September 2022, and since then, the numbers have been steadily increasing due to changing consumer preferences, higher fuel costs, and a growing awareness of alternative transport options.
More consumers are now considering electric vehicles not just for symbolic reasons but for their practical advantages. In congested urban areas with short commutes and high fuel consumption, many buyers see EVs as a more affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to petrol and diesel vehicles.
Bangladesh’s interest in electric mobility aligns with global trends. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that global electric car sales surpassed 20 million in 2025, comprising a significant portion of new vehicle sales worldwide. Europe, in particular, experienced a surge in electric vehicle registrations, driven by increasing petrol prices and energy security concerns.
The surge in electric vehicle demand can also be attributed to the spike in global fuel prices due to the Iran conflict in 2026. In the European Union and the European Free Trade Association, EVs accounted for more than 20% of new vehicle sales in March.
To further promote electric mobility in Bangladesh, the government introduced various policy measures in 2026. These include fiscal incentives for electric public transport, such as duty-free imports of electric school buses and enhanced financing options for EV purchases. Additionally, the draft “Electric Vehicle Industry Development Policy 2025” aims to incentivize local manufacturing and increase EV adoption in government fleets.
As the electric vehicle market expands in Bangladesh, local manufacturers and foreign brands are playing a significant role. Chinese automakers like BYD have entered the market, with plans to assemble EVs locally. Other companies, such as CFMOTO, have introduced electric two-wheelers tailored for urban commuting.
While interest in EVs is growing, challenges remain, including limited public charging infrastructure and concerns about maintenance and battery life. Industry experts emphasize the importance of supportive government policies, including reduced registration fees and tax incentives, to accelerate EV adoption.
Investments in charging infrastructure are also crucial for the long-term growth of the EV market in Bangladesh. Companies like CrackPlatoon Charging Solutions Limited are expanding their network of charging stations to facilitate wider adoption of electric vehicles.
To address consumer concerns, companies are focusing on after-sales service and technician training to build confidence among buyers transitioning to electric mobility. Mercedes-Benz Bangladesh and other industry players are witnessing an uptick in EV demand, particularly among urban and premium consumers.
While electric mobility is still in its early stages in Bangladesh, the increasing availability of EVs and the development of supporting infrastructure indicate a shift towards mainstream adoption. As consumers become more familiar with the benefits of EVs, the transition from traditional vehicles to electric vehicles is expected to gain momentum in the coming years.
