The Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) authorities have expelled a student and imposed disciplinary measures on eight others following an investigation into allegations of harassing a female student on social media. The decision was made by the Ruet Disciplinary Committee based on the report from a university probe committee led by Professor Dr. Md Robiul Islam Sarkar.
The expelled student, Suman Majumdar, belonged to the 2024-25 academic session in the Computer Science and Engineering Department. Ruet’s Disciplinary Ordinance Section 6 was invoked after the investigation committee confirmed instances of sexual harassment.
Among the eight students facing consequences, three were suspended for three academic years for aiding and abetting, while five were suspended for one academic year for instigation. Furthermore, all eight students were expelled from their residential halls and will not receive character certificates from the university.
Director of Student Welfare Professor Dr. Robiul Islam Sarkar emphasized the university’s commitment to ensuring the safety and respect of all students, especially female students. Prompt action was taken by the administration upon receiving the allegations, and appropriate disciplinary steps were implemented following the committee’s findings.
The university maintains a strict stance against any form of harassment towards female students, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior within the campus premises.
