Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman has suggested that the government’s planned power cuts in Dhaka should commence from the National Parliament Complex. He put forward this proposal during his address at the House at around 8:00 pm, following a statement by State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit regarding the energy crisis.
Rahman emphasized the importance of ensuring equity between urban and rural areas, stating that it is crucial for the well-being of all citizens. In response to the discussions with the opposition leader, the government announced a preliminary trial of 110MW of load-shedding in Dhaka.
Echoing the sentiments expressed by the state minister, Shafiqur urged that the power cuts should initiate from the parliament premises itself. He stressed the need for parity, suggesting that if other parts of Dhaka experience power outages, the parliament should also undergo the same to uphold the principles of equality.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed emphasized the necessity of the parliament’s uninterrupted operation, stating that it cannot be halted. Clarifying his stance, Shafiqur explained that his intention was for the load-shedding to be implemented during non-session hours to symbolize the commitment to building a fair and just society.
