“Meta Introduces AI-Based Teen Topic Monitoring”

Date:

Meta is set to enhance parental supervision tools by introducing a feature that allows parents to monitor the general topics their teenagers are inquiring about using its artificial intelligence (AI) assistant. This new feature will be available for parents overseeing Teen Accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger in select countries initially, with a plan for a global rollout in the near future.

The updated parental supervision tools will include an “Insights” tab within Meta’s Family Centre, accessible through the app and web platforms. Through this dashboard, parents can view the various categories of subjects their teenagers have discussed with the Meta AI during the past week.

These topics may cover a wide range of areas such as education, entertainment, lifestyle, travel, writing, health, and wellness. Users will have the option to explore more specific sub-topics within each category, like fashion, food, holidays, fitness, and mental health.

Meta emphasized that this feature is just the beginning and will be refined based on input from parents and experts. In instances where the AI assistant deems it necessary, it may decline to answer certain queries and guide users towards safety resources. Parents will still be informed of the topics their teenagers attempted to address, even if responses were not provided.

Additionally, Meta is working on implementing alerts to notify parents when their teens try to discuss self-harm with the AI. While the timeline for this alert system’s launch is yet to be disclosed, the company is committed to enhancing safety measures.

The introduction of AI insights complements Meta’s existing parental controls, which enable parents to manage screen time, schedule breaks, and review recent interactions with contacts over a seven-day period. Meta reported a significant increase in the usage of its parental supervision tools among teenagers in the United States compared to the previous year.
