The Information and Broadcasting Minister, Zahir Uddin Swapon, emphasized the government’s commitment to providing a safe environment for journalism without fear. Swapon acknowledged the mental strain faced by individuals, especially those in the media, when living in fear. He highlighted the challenges of constant surveillance and expressed his determination to ensure a fear-free atmosphere for journalism in Bangladesh, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision for media freedom.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat following a cabinet meeting, Swapon outlined the government’s efforts to establish a reliable system to uphold the free flow of information and media liberties. Upholding the pledge made upon taking office, the government prioritizes the unhindered dissemination of information and media freedom.
Despite long-standing assertions, Swapon affirmed the government’s proactive stance in solidifying the operational framework for these commitments. The minister mentioned a commission established during the interim government’s term, whose recommendations are currently under government review. Collaborating with the State Minister and other officials, they are evaluating these suggestions to formulate an actionable strategy concerning media freedom.
