Terming the assault on The Daily Star’s office last year as distressing and intolerable, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman emphasized today the crucial role of press freedom in safeguarding and advancing democracy.
While visiting The Daily Star Centre in Dhaka to commemorate the newspaper’s 35th anniversary, the minister expressed his disapproval of past attacks on the media, stressing that such actions must not recur in the future.
Emphasizing the public’s desire for an independent, bold, and accountable media, Asaduzzaman underscored the vital connection between press freedom and democracy.
During his inspection of the vandalism and arson that occurred on the night of December 18 last year, the minister voiced deep concern over the incident, stating that assaults on newspapers, regardless of differing opinions, strike at the core of democracy.
Asaduzzaman outlined the government’s commitment to fostering an environment where the media can operate freely and without intimidation. He underscored the administration’s determination to prevent any reoccurrence of such tragic events, acknowledging the lasting impact of such incidents and the ongoing efforts to move forward.
