Co-host Mexico kicked off the tournament with a 2-0 victory over South Africa, as Julian Quinones and Israel Reyes celebrated the first goal. The match took a tumultuous turn as Cesar Montes of Mexico and Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane of South Africa received direct red cards.
