Perplexity, a startup specializing in artificial intelligence (AI), has revealed plans to go public with an initial public offering (IPO) in 2028, regardless of the market response to upcoming stock market debuts by rival AI firms. In an interview with CNBC, CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed that the company’s intentions for a public listing remain firm, independent of the market entries of prominent AI developers like Anthropic and OpenAI.
Srinivas emphasized that Perplexity’s IPO timeline for 2028 stands unaffected by the activities of other industry players. The announcement comes amidst heightened investor interest in technology sector IPOs, with Anthropic, known for the Claude AI model, filing confidentially for an IPO and OpenAI also making similar confidential submissions. Additionally, the upcoming public offering of SpaceX later this month has garnered significant anticipation.
While acknowledging that the performance of these IPOs could impact market sentiment within the AI sector, Srinivas expressed confidence in the future outlook. He highlighted the potential influence of SpaceX’s IPO as a precursor to the responses expected for Anthropic and OpenAI.
Srinivas reinforced the significant valuations of both Anthropic and OpenAI, attributing them to their leading roles in AI advancement. However, he noted that sustaining these valuations would require continuous enhancements in model capabilities. He underlined the evolving user preference for highly effective AI models tailored to specific tasks over solely relying on cutting-edge or costly systems.
In discussing user behavior, Srinivas pointed out that accessibility and cost-effectiveness are increasingly prioritized. He mentioned a scenario where an open-source model offering 90% efficiency at a fraction of the cost of a premium model would likely be preferred for practical purposes.
