“Bangladeshi Students Seek Justice in US Double Homicide Case”

Date:

The primary suspect in the double homicide case involving two Bangladeshi PhD students at the University of South Florida has been remanded without bail on murder charges, amidst a packed Tampa courtroom with supporters of the victims calling for justice. While the families of the victims, Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy, are in Bangladesh, their peers stood in solidarity during the hearing for the accused, Hisham Abugharbieh.

During the court proceedings, Abir al Hasib Shourav, a close friend in attendance, emphasized the strong sense of community among Bangladeshi individuals living abroad. Another friend, Rifatul Islam, expressed shock and disbelief over the tragic events, highlighting the betrayal of a place that should have been a safe haven for the victims.

Hillsborough County Judge J Logan Murphy issued a no-contact order for Abugharbieh with witnesses and relatives, charging him with two counts of first-degree murder along with additional offenses. The case is set to be presented to a grand jury on May 7, with potential capital punishment looming if the suspect is found guilty.

State Attorney Suzy Lopez commended the support shown by the Bangladeshi students in seeking justice for their lost friends. Meanwhile, investigators disclosed that a third roommate had informed them of Abugharbieh’s attempts to dispose of incriminating evidence, allegedly utilizing a cart to discard belongings stained with blood belonging to Limon. Subsequent searches revealed blood traces in Abugharbieh’s room and Bristy’s identification cards in Limon’s possession, while court records unveiled Abugharbieh’s inquiry about disposing of a human body shortly before the victims’ disappearance.

Although Limon’s body was recovered near a bridge, the authorities suspect foul play in Bristy’s case, as her remains are yet to be located. The Bangladeshi Student Association has called on the University of South Florida to commemorate the victims through memorials, posthumous degrees, and annual tributes. Notably, a fundraising initiative initiated by Zamil’s academic mentor has garnered significant support, accumulating over $80,000 to aid the bereaved families.
