Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) apprehended a convict on Thursday in Badarganj, Rangpur, who had been on the run since being sentenced to death for murdering his cousin in a land dispute in Mithapukur upazila back in 1995.
The individual, identified as Shafi Uddin, aged 60 and the main suspect in the case, is the son of Kafil Uddin from Khamar Kursha village in Mithapukur upazila, as per police sources.
Additional Superintendent of Police Biplob Kumar Goswami, who also serves as the senior assistant director of Rangpur Rab-13, confirmed the arrest in a press release issued later that day.
Acting on a tip-off, a Rab team conducted a successful operation near the Palli Bidyut office in Badarganj municipality, leading to the apprehension of Shafi Uddin.
Following his arrest, he was transferred to the appropriate police station for further legal procedures, as stated by the Rab official.
Shafi Uddin had evaded capture since the fatal incident in 1995, where his cousin was killed amidst a family disagreement over land. After a protracted legal process, he was ultimately given the death penalty based on witness accounts and evidence.
Preliminary questioning disclosed that he had resided in Badarganj under various aliases for approximately thirty years post the crime.
Recently, the victim’s family reached out to law enforcement authorities to ensure the enforcement of the court’s ruling.
