The Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has apprehended two individuals in connection with a robbery scheme where they masqueraded as detectives to rob a Bangladeshi resident of Dubai.
The arrests came after police conducted raids in the Kazir Dewri and Hathazari neighborhoods of the port city. The suspects, identified as Md Sohel (also known as Sohel Rana), aged 40, and Uttam Chowdhury (also known as Rabi Chowdhury), aged 41, were engaged in selling the stolen jewelry.
According to Sheikh Shariful Islam, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DB (South), Sohel Rana was captured in Kazir Dewri on February 19. Following his disclosure, law enforcement officers raided Amanat Shah Jewellers at Amin Market in Hathazari’s Ichhapur, where Uttam Chowdhury was apprehended with Tk 2.50 lakh in cash generated from the disposed gold.
Subsequent information provided by Uttam led investigators to Bondhu Sundar Jewellers at SM Shopping Centre in Hathazari upazila, where 69.39 grams of the stolen gold were recovered.
The robbery occurred on February 14 along the Wasim Akram Expressway, where the victim’s vehicle was intercepted by a criminal group upon his return from Dubai.
DC Shariful Islam mentioned that efforts are underway to apprehend other individuals linked to the gang. He also noted that Sohel Rana has a history of three previous criminal cases.
