“Bangladesh Women Defeat Pakistan in T20 World Cup Upset”

Date:

Bangladesh clinched a vital 23-run victory over Pakistan in their third Group A encounter of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. Shorna Akter’s impressive late performance, coupled with three wickets each from spinners Nahida Akter and Shanjida Akter Meghla, secured the win for Bangladesh.

This triumph, marking Bangladesh’s second win in three matches, propels them to the third spot in the Group A standings with four points, keeping their semifinal hopes alive. Shorna’s unbeaten 39 off 22 balls, after Bangladesh were struggling at 72 for five, powered them to a total of 123 for six in their allotted 20 overs.

Pakistan started well with openers Muneeba Ali and Gull Feroza putting on 49 runs before the left-arm spin duo of Nahida (3-18) and Meghla (3-21) triggered a collapse. Pakistan went from 49 without loss to 84 for eight, losing eight wickets for just 35 runs. Rabeya Khan and Ritu Moni also contributed with a wicket each as Pakistan finished at 100 for eight.

Despite a shaky start, Bangladesh managed to post a competitive total, thanks to Captain Nigar Sultana Joty’s 36 and crucial cameos from other batters. Shorna’s explosive finish was crucial in propelling Bangladesh to their final score.

Shorna’s impactful innings earned her the player of the match award. Bangladesh had previously defeated the Netherlands but suffered a loss to Australia. They are set to face India in their upcoming group-stage match in Manchester on June 25.
